The San Simeon Creek Campground offers 134 campsites for tent camping or recreational vehicles. The maximum length for a RV is 35 feet. Each campsite has a fire ring and picnic table. Water spigots are available throughout the campground. Restrooms with flush toilets and coin operated showers, a dump station and water fill-up for RV's, and pay phones are also available. Firewood is for sale from the campground host. Recreational activities include camping, picnicking, hiking, fishing, surfing, beachcombing, bird watching and whale watching. The Junior Ranger Program is a regularly scheduled interpretive program for children. Interpretive walks of the San Simeon Trail may also be available. That's the only way to describe my time in the small town Bluff, just ten minutes from Invercargill. Bluff is at the absolute southern tip of the south island. It's the closest you can get to Antarctica in the Eastern hemisphere. Well.... Bluff looks out onto Stewert Island, which is technically part of New Zealand and technically closer. But I didn't go there, so we're pretending it doesn't exist. (On that note, please ignore the giant island in the background of some of this entry's pictures). We arrived in Bluff under less-than-auspicious weather conditions. The clouds brooded over us as we parked. They spat at us like llamas as we started walking the trail to Bluff's southern point; and you know how Buddy feels about llamas. But the salivating clouds held off for our entire trek out to the tip. Visibility wasn't great, but I was impressed nonetheless. I've never been so south in my entire life, and I may never get more south than Bluff ever. A milestone moment. We hiked back to the van, not wanted to get drenched, but the rain still didn't come. We headed North on the Pacific Highway towards Byron Bay. Stopped off at a rest area called New Italy to eat our lunch. We decided then to bypass Byron Bay and head straight to where we were camping 16km North near Mulumbimby, to a place called Macca's camp site. It looked ok on the internet and was 20 dollars a night. When we eventually found the camp site the first thing we saw was a manky old sign outside made out of a bit of old cloth. Straight away Ste didn't like it but we drove in anyway. We could either go left or right on a dirt road. We went left and there was a house on the hill at the top. It was a creepy old shack with loads of junk around it so we carefully retreated and took the other road. We stopped at the camp amenities block to see if we could find someone. There were a few tents but no one in site. The camp kitchen was dirty and rusty with a pad lock on the freezer. Liz went to check out the toilets and there was blood on the wall! The campground is composed of two overlapping loops at the base of Snow Summit Ski Resort Mountain. A dense stand of Jeffrey pine, Douglas fir, and oak provide good shade to most camp sites. Although a tempting campground for RVs, it is really best suited for tent campers and a mecca for beginner and serious mountain bike enthusiasts. Also at the base of Snow Summit is the Team Bear Mountain Bike Center which has mountain bikes for rent and repair facilities. My recollection is that after an evenings pleasant entertainment, I respectfully retired for the evening, drifted into bed without making a sound and slept well. Niks recollection is that at 2.45am I clambered into the tent, **** as a ****. Almost knock the tent over and then collapsed face down on my sleeping bag fully dressed and fell asleep, snoring all night. Hmmmm, I think that Niks account is wrong... I awoke the following morning with a small hippo sitting on my head and someone banging a drum just behind me. For some reason Nik seems to be in a bad mood. Weird... well it was 25 cents a pint, so who knows. It must be the only time I have ever ordered 40 pints of lager at a pub, and paid less than a few quid! A load of the group went on a helicopter trip over the Icefields Parkway, which is regarded as one of the most spectacular sightseeing trips in the world. I lent Beth my camera so she could take some pictures for us both, but Nik and I couldn't really justify the expense. It worked out at 00 for the hour for the two of us! A lot of money by any standard. The rest of the group loved it however. We'll save ourselves for the Grand Canyon. Nik and I had a water pistol fight at ...
